Avril Haubrich
My inspiration comes from my life experiences, before becoming a professional artist I had an executive career and was fortunate enough to travel to many countries as well as live in four different countries during this time. This helped ignite my lifelong desire to travel and see as much of the world as I can during my lifetime. I am fortunate enough to have now travelled to all seven continents in the world.
When I look to start a new painting, I have an image of what I want to achieve, it may be based on a captivating scene I have visited, photographs or just an imaginary image I have in my mind.
I am particularly inspired by nature and its beauty and also have a fascination with the sea, I find it alluring and equally fearsome in its power. My water-themed paintings were inspired by my Antarctica travels as we left the calm sea and approached the tempestuous waters of the Drake Passage.
My paintings often start off in one direction and then may turn in a different route when a surprising mix of colours or techniques blend together to give me an unexpected effect. I may then move off in a different direction as the painting takes me to a different place, I love “happy accidents” to occur in my paintings.
I like to experiment with unconventional materials such as bronzing powder and marble dust to create vibrancy and texture in my paintings blending brushwork and palette knife techniques.
